New Construction Site Prep

For your new construction, we fully prepare your site for safety and seamless project management. Our team begins by fully marking the area for site work, having utilities located and marked, and clearing the land as needed. We demo and haul away debris from any existing structures before grading the site for drainage and erosion control.

Commercial Development Support

Whether expanding a parking lot, upgrading a roadway, or constructing a commercial building, be sure your site is properly prepared. Let us handle the permitting requirements and soil analysis to get things started. We then perform site clearing and foundation work to ensure your project has a solid base for long-term stability and structural integrity.

Site Preparation FAQs

  • How long does site work usually take?

For a standard residential lot in the Twin Cities, site prep usually takes between 1–2 weeks, depending on the weather and the complexity of the terrain. Larger commercial sites or heavily wooded lots that require additional or extensive clearing may take several weeks to complete.

  • Do I need a permit for site grading?

Yes. Most municipalities in and around the Twin Cities require a grading or excavation permit if you are moving a significant amount of soil or altering drainage. We recommend checking with your local building department, though we can help with navigating the requirements for obtaining permits.

  • What is the difference between clearing and grubbing?

Clearing is removing surface-level vegetation like trees, brush, and weeds. Grubbing is more involved and includes removing roots, stumps, and buried logs. Both are needed to ensure the soil is stable enough to support a new structure without future settling.

  • What is included in site work for a new construction project?

Site work is the initial preparation of a property before building begins. It usually includes:

    • Clearing debris
    • Removing trees
    • Rough grading to ensure proper drainage
    • Excavating for foundations or basements
    • Installing underground utilities (water, sewer, and electrical)

  • How do you handle underground utilities during excavation?

We prioritize safety—yours and ours. Before we break ground, we coordinate with utility locators to mark all public utility lines like gas, electricity, and water. For private utilities, like irrigation systems and invisible fencing, we ask that homeowners mark those before digging begins.

  • Why is rough grading important for my property?

Rough grading shapes your property to direct water away from the site where your foundation will be. Since heavy snowmelt and spring rains are common in Minnesota, proper grading is needed to protect against basement flooding and soil erosion.

  • Can site work be done during the winter?

Yes, site work can be performed in the winter with the right equipment, though frost often makes it more challenging.  Tasks like final grading and soil compaction, however, are best handled when the ground is thawed to ensure the highest level of precision and stability.

  • What is meant by “cut and fill” in site preparation?

The cut-and-fill method is used to level a job site. Cutting refers to the removal of soil from high points of the lot, while filling uses that soil to elevate lower portions. This process is environmentally friendly and minimizes the need to haul away dirt or bring it in for a price.

  • How much space is needed around a building site for equipment?

For safety and efficiency purposes, we usually require a 10–15-foot perimeter around the base of the building. This allows enough room to maneuver machinery, stockpile materials, and properly slope the site.

From start to finish, We'll complete your project on time and on budget.
